The Dip

by Kevin Rutherford 0 Comments

As I was reading and getting ready for the Destination Health show today, I started to feel frustrated and overwhelmed.

Keto is becoming very mainstream very quickly. We have many of the big-name food companies and celebrities getting into the keto food business. This is clearly not nutrient-dense keto (NDK). It's just more junk, masquerading as real food. Most of it is highly processed and sourced from the worst possible ingredients. But...it has all the right buzzwords and marketing slogans to fool the masses.

Before I get down to the point of this article, I want to keep driving home the message of NDK.

Eat real food as often as possible. Meat, seafood, veggies, eggs, nuts and seeds, and limited amounts of berries. Real food does not have an ingredient list. The more often you do this, the healthier you will be. It really is just that simple. The more you stray from this, the more complicated this becomes. You'll need to be able to read and understand labels and ingredients. There is no easy way to simplify that.

Back to my point, I also read several articles about keto supplements and new keto weight loss products. It's getting overwhelming, and companies are spending a lot of money to market these products. I even read an article titled "Keto Insurance." After reading through lots and lots of text about how keto supplements don't work, it turned out that they were selling keto supplements.

Then I read a post in another Facebook group about truck drivers and keto. The post was a lot like we see here every day, a great success story about how keto helped someone lose a lot of weight and get off of many medications. Then in one of the comments, someone also shared how keto helped them do many of the same things. Then they went on to say that eating that way wiped out their immune system and they got cancer. In a flash of clarity, I saw the next trend that will be coming soon.

People who have been eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) for decades will now switch to keto, and if they stick with it they will see the same amazing results. Some of these people will be diagnosed with horrendous diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, strokes, etc. Many people will be quick to jump on the bandwagon and blame the ketogenic diet. It's completely illogical, but that won't matter because this is an emotional issue.

That's when I became frustrated and overwhelmed. How do I fight this? I know how many people can be saved by NDK. I know how many people will become far healthier than they have ever been on the Standard American Diet. I also know how many powerful forces are aligned against us.

That's when I thought about a little book by one of my favorite authors, Seth Godin. It's called The Dip.

The old saying is, "wrong-winners do quit, and quitters do win." Every new project (or job, or hobby, or diet) starts out exciting and fun. Then it gets harder and less fun, until it hits a low point really hard, and is not much fun at all. And then you find yourself asking if the goal is even worth the hassle. Maybe you're in a Dip. A temporary setback that will get better if you keep pushing. But maybe it's really a cul-de-sac, which will never get better, no matter how hard you try.

According to bestselling author Seth Godin, what really sets superstars apart from everyone else is the ability to escape dead ends quickly, while staying focused and motivated when it really counts.

Winners quit fast, quit often, and quit without guilt until they commit to beating the right Dip for the right reasons. In fact, winners seek out the Dip. They realize that the bigger the barrier, the bigger the reward for getting past it. Losers, on the other hand, fall into two basic traps. Either they fail to stick out the Dip (they get to the moment of truth and then give up), or they never even find the right Dip to conquer.

I can promise you that eating NDK for the rest of your life is worth it! Fight through the Dip. Fight with everything you have, fight for your life, because that is what's at stake. Ignore the noise, marketing hype, and critics.

Remember just this one thing:

Eat real food as often as possible. Meat, seafood, veggies, eggs, nuts and seeds, and limited amounts of berries. Real food does not have an ingredient list. The more often you do this, the healthier you will be.

The book is only 76 pages, and it's worth every minute. It focuses mostly on work, projects, and business, but just apply the lessons to what you are going through with your diet. It's a very powerful lesson.
